A sailor accused of stealing a Navy laptop and peddling its classified contents to an undisclosed foreign government pleaded guilty today to espionage, desertion and other charges. Navy submariner pleads guilty to trying to sell classified data.
NORFOLK — Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Ariel J. Weinmann walked up to an embassy in Vienna, Austria, rang the bell and offered U.S. secrets to the person who met him in the foyer, he admitted in a military court Monday. The embassy was identified in court only as belonging to “Country X.” A Pentagon source who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed (?) that the country was Russia. In pleading guilty to espionage, desertion and related charges, the 22-year-old submariner outlined his efforts to gain residency in another country after becoming disillusioned with the Navy. The hearing will continue at Norfolk Naval Station with the sentencing phase. Ariel J.Weinmann told the judge he believed his actions could hurt morale and security.

"I believe if it fell into the wrong hand, sir, the information could be detrimental to the United States," -- Weinmann said.
He said he made copies of classified material on a laptop computer, which he brought with him to Austria. He said he printed one document and copied other information onto CDs and said he had unclassified, classified and secret information sitting on a table in his apartment in Austria. /more/
How we wish the media would get off the "undisclosed foreign government" crap, since it was already reported, that Ariel Weinmann sold the data to Russia and Israel. /WRH/
